Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

North Korea Weekly (July 12 - July 18, 2004)

Inside North Korea

Rodong Sinmun said in its July 12 editorial titled "Learn Fervent Patriotism from the Korean People's Army (KPA)," "all WPK members and workers are urged to follow the example of KPA soldiers who internalize the spirit of defending our Leader even at the cost of their lives, and to become genuine patriots who make a victorious breakthrough by sacrificing their lives in this Songun era."

The Central Broadcasting Station propagandized on July 13, "on the occasion of a month marked for an Anti-U.S. Joint Struggle (June 25-July 27), various WPK organizations in Hwanghaenam-do urge WPK members and workers to bolster their anti-U.S. spirit and channel this spirit into their agricultural activities by engaging in farming as if they are in a battle to crush the archenemy, the U.S. imperialist."

International Issues

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry insisted, "We are engaged in peaceful nuclear activities in keeping with our sovereign rights. Therefore, they cannot be subject to any demand for a freeze or dismantlement. Therefore, we cannot help but view any demand for forcible inspection of our nuclear facilities and materials as a malicious attempt to disarm the DPRK." (July 14, Central Broadcasting Station)

Pyongyang Broadcasting Service criticized the U.S. on July 15, saying, "The U.S. has recently been making a series of moves to elevate Japan as its most significant military base by reducing and relocating its forces in South Korea. In so doing, Washington intends to increase the efficiency of launching large-scale preemptive attacks on the DPRK in the event of an emergency state on the Korean peninsula: it can then leverage the U.S. Navy and Air Forces stationed in Japan, as well as the USFK stationed to the south of the Han River."

Inter-Korean Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station made a unilateral claim regarding the 10th reunion of separated families on July 12, propagandizing that "members of the separated families from both the North and the South expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Supreme Commander Kim Jong Il, who has made it possible for them to have such a meaningful reunion."

The Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland and the National Reunification Research Center criticized Seoul for blocking the South Korean private delegation's planned visit to Pyongyang to attend the commemoration ceremony on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the demise of Kim Il Sung, dubbing it "a serious anti-unification crime and an attempt to set history and the march towards unification back by 10 years." (July 17, Central Broadcasting Station)

The KPA Navy Command made an ungrounded claim that "the alleged intrusion of a North Korean patrol boat into South Korea claimed by the South Korean troops is a completely concocted and fabricated story." (July 17, Central Broadcasting Station)
