Internal Affairs
o Chairman Kim Jong-il visited military units 952 and 769, the units awarded with Oh Jung Heup's Seventh Regiment Title, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on June 10.
o On the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the founding of the Joseon Boy Scouts, every city, county and elementary school in North Korea held ceremonies for the boys joining the Scouts, according to the Central Broadcasting Station on June 7.
- In an editorial marking the anniversary, the Rodong Sinmun urged those joining the scouts to be dependable talents endowed with wisdom, virtue and spirit of the military-first North Korea.
o The German Friendship Association and the Goethe Institute jointly opened a German "room for distribution of books on science and technology" at the Cheollima House of Culture in Pyongyang, according to the (North) Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on June 2.
- Some 4,500 items of German books on medicine, technology and other subjects, videos and newspapers are on display in a 150 square meter space on the second floor of the Cheollima House of Culture.
o North Korea propagandized its leader and chairman Kim Jong-il's achievements in the commentaries of the Rodong Sinmun on May 25 and June 9. Under titles of "Let us further exalt life power of the Ganggye spirit," and "Revolutionary Military Spirit with Ganggye Spirit," North Korea defined the spirit of the 1990s as revolutionary military spirit and Ganggye spirit.
o North Korea was pressing ahead with a power system improvement work, which is almost at a completion stage, to guarantee power supply for Pyongyang on a priority basis even though steel and other materials for equipment were lacking, the Minju Joseon reported on May 25.
o National Youth-Students Sports Competitions for the Kim Jong-il Peak Prizes were held at major stadiums in Pyongyang and Sariwon recently and Sports Competition for the Bocheonbo Torch Prizes in Pyongyang and the provinces, according to media organizations on June 8 and June 5.
Relations with South Korea
o The ninth Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Promotion Committee meeting held in Pyongyang on June 2-5 adopted a seven-point agreement, including the construction schedule for the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
-During the period, both sides also signed an annex to the shipping agreement concluded in the fourth inter-Korean contact on shipping cooperation.
o Lee Yoon-ku, president of the South Korean National Red Cross, and his North Korean counterpart Jang Jae-eon met in Pyongyang on June 7 and agreed to hold the 10th round of reunion of separated families in the Mt. Geumgang on July 11-16.
o The North Korean naval command denounced the South Korean navy for continuing to uphold the Northern Limit Line, claiming that it was established arbitrarily by the United States, according to the North Korean broadcasting services on June 9. They also condemned South Korea for engaging in dangerous military provocations recently in the northern part of Korea's West Sea.
External Affairs
o Through a commentary of its Rodong Sinmun on June 8, North Korea denounced Japan's Lower House for passing a bill banning the entry of certain foreign ships as a rash act by those who did not welcome the North Korea-Japan summit talks and their outcome.
o China Southern Airlines will inaugurate a regular flight service between Shenyang, Northeast China, and Pyongyang, launching two flight services every Monday and Friday early in June, according to the China Radio International on June 7.
- North Korea now maintains regular flight services with six destinations in three countries of China, Russia and Thailand. The destinations are Beijing, Macau, Shenyang, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Bangkok. China Southern Airlines will be the only foreign carrier with a regular flight service with North Korea.
o A delegation of the German-North Korean Parliamentary Friendship Association, led by Koshich (phonetic), a member of the German Federal Parliament, was in North Korea for a visit on June 5-8, according to the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station.
