Inside North Korea

The Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) announced that the 2nd session of the 11th Supreme People's Assembly will be convened in Pyongyang on March 25, Juche 93 (2004). (March 5, Central Broadcasting Station)

Kim Jong Il paid an inspection visit to KPA unit No. 252 (March 3, Central Broadcasting Station) and to KPA unit No. 272 (March 7, Central Broadcasting Station) and ordered soldiers to strengthen combat capabilities. He was accompanied by KPA generals Ri Myong Su and Hyon Chol Hae, and first vice department director of the Central Committee of the WPK, Ri Yong Chol (date unreported).

International Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station said, in a March 3 report entitled "The Japanese's malicious attempt to stifle the DPRK," "Recently, Japan's Diet introduced the amendment to the Foreign Exchange Law into national policy, aimed at imposing sanctions against the DPRK. The amended Foreign Exchange Law is entirely contrary to the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration in which the two countries agreed not to take any provocative actions that might pose a threat to each other's security, while abiding by international law."

The Central Broadcasting Station said on March 4, in an editorial entitled "Self-reliance, Peace and Friendliness - the DPRK's Consistent Foreign Policy," stressing that "self-reliance, peace and friendliness are key principles in the DPRK's foreign policy while imperialists join forces with each other to attack and stifle progressive countries one by one. Therefore, it is imperative for us to strengthen alliances with all countries that advocate self-reliance."

Inter-Korean Issues

Pyongyang Broadcasting Station propagandized in an editorial entitled "The U.S. imperialist is an aggressor against the peace and unification of the Korean peninsula," saying, "the way to crush the U.S. imperialist's anti-Korean, anti-unification and anti-peace maneuver lies in anti-American, national cooperation. Therefore, if the people of the North and the South join forces, fully committed to the spirit of the June 15 Joint Declaration and in pursuit of self-reliant unification, we will emerge invincible and neither the U.S. imperialist nor any aggressor or nuclear arsenal can defeat us."
