    Pyongyang, March 17 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today in a signed article recalls that an agreement on economic and cultural cooperation was signed between the governments of the DPRK and the former Soviet Union on March 17, 1949. It marked an important occasion as it opened a new chapter for the development of the DPRK-Russia relations, the article says, and continues: In the past period the DPRK and Russia have steadily developed economic and cultural cooperation and exchange in keeping with the aspiration and interests of their peoples on the legal basis of the agreement.
    The bilateral economic and cultural cooperation has become closer in recent years.
    Substantial work has been promoted between the two countries to boost exchange and cooperation in economic, cultural and other fields of social life The successful performance tours of the DPRK made by the Moiseyev State Academy Folk Dance Troupe and the State Academy Ensemble of the Ministry of Interior of Russia some days ago are a striking demonstration of the ever-growing traditional friendship between the two countries.
    A successful drive is now under way in Russia under the leadership of President Putin to ensure socio-political stability, defend security and interests of the country and achieve the target of building a powerful state.
    The DPRK and Russia have supported and cooperated with each other in the efforts to settle the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, achieve stability and peace in the region and seek a fair settlement of major international issues.
    The bilateral friendly relations will as always grow stronger in keeping with the ardent desire of the two peoples and the trend of the development of international relations in the new century.
