US welcomes results of six-party talks

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States on Saturday welcomed the results of the second round of six-party talks on thenuclear issue of the Korean peninsula, saying that progress was made on a regularized process for the settlement of the issue.
"The United States welcomes the results of the second round of six-party talks, which were held in Beijing Feb. 25-28," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said in a press statement posted on the website of the department.
He said the parties had "very serious discussions" at this round on the comprehensive denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
"While key differences remain that will need to be addressed infurther rounds of discussions, this round of talks made progress on a regularized process for the peaceful and diplomatic resolution of this issue," the spokesman said.
He said the parties also agreed to hold another round of talks by the end of the second quarter of this year and to establish a working group to address, and attempt to resolve, detailed issues in between plenary sessions.
Boucher said the United States had worked closely with its partners in the talks and were pleased with the high degree of cooperation among them.
He said the United States would like to thank the Chinese government in particular "for not only participating fully in the talks, but also for its exemplary diplomatic efforts in organizingand hosting the talks. "
"We hope that North Korea (the Democratic People's Republic of Korea or DPRK) will work with the five other parties to achieve a satisfactory resolution to the problems created by its pursuit of nuclear weapons," Boucher said.
The four-day six-party talks in Beijing was participated by delegations from China, the DPRK, the United States, South Korea, Japan and Russia.
