With a joint editorial published on the occasion of the New Year's day, "Pyongyang Citizens' Rally" was held at the Kim Il Sung square on Jan. 6, attended by some 10 thousand people including cabinet members such as Pak Pong Ju, Han Song Ryong and Choe Thae Bok, officials of the central organizations, members of the workers' groups, government agencies, economic institutes, chancellors of universities and those acknowledged by their innovative works. The presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly gave an order on Jan 9. "Nampo city will now be referred to as a Special City, with the port district and Wawoodo district now belonging to the Nampo Special City."(Central Broadcasting Station) |
International Issues
Pyongyang Broadcasting Station said on Jan 6, "the Pyongyang Declaration between the DPRK and Japan is a historic declaration of a great political and diplomatic significance: it paved the way for the two antagonistic nations to reconcile and build normal relations with each other. Therefore, if the Pyongyang Declaration is respected and sincerely implemented, Pyongyang-Tokyo relations can be put on the right track." |

A foreign ministry spokesperson said in a KCNA briefing on Jan. 9, "Recently the U.S. attempts to put a positive spin on what they did in some Middle East countries. Washington seems to mistakenly assume that such things will also happen in the Korean peninsula. However, as far as the Korean peninsula is concerned, they should make no mistake about it for there remains only one principle of the DPRK, i.e. principle of self-reliance"(Central Broadcasting Station) |

A foreign ministry spokesperson said in a KCNA briefing on Jan 10 regarding the U.S. private delegation's recent visit to the DPRK(Jan. 6-10), "We have openly disclosed our justifiable nuclear activities as they are, and displayed our nuclear deterrents to the U.S. delegation . Therefore, we expect that the delegation's visit this time will serve as a groundwork in seeking a peaceful resolution to the nuclear standoff between the DPRK and the U.S. (Central Broadcasting Station)" |
Inter-Korean Issues
The Central Broadcasting Station said on Jan. 8, quoting a statement issued by the DPRK Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, "Given the critical status of the standoff between Korean people and the U.S., people of all walks of life in South Korea are urged to join the campaign against the U.S., to stifle Washington's attempt to strengthen their military capability for invading the DPRK." |

The DPRK Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland issued a statement on Jan 9, "The U.S. is recently pressuring the South Korean authorities to adjust the process of improving inter-Korean relations in line with the progress of resolving "the nuclear issue" : Washington demands that the project of reconnecting railroads and highways as well as construction of Kaesong Industrial District be put to a stop. It is not only an intolerable challenge to the Korean nation aspiring after the national reconciliation but also a serious interference in the internal affairs of the Korean nation. |
