NK invites US to visit Nuke Site
2004-01-03
North Korea has agreed to allow a U.S. delegation including a top nuclear scientist to visit its main nuclear complex at Yeongbyeon next week, USA Today reported on Friday (Jan. 2).
If true, the delegation would be the first to see the site since North Korea expelled foreign weapons inspectors one year ago.
Quoting members of the U.S. delegation, the newspaper said that Sig Hecker, director from 1985 to 1997 of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which produced the first U.S. nuclear bomb and still constructs weapons, would also be included in the mission.
The newspaper also said that the Bush Administration had approved the trip, scheduled Jan. 6-10.
A high-level official at South Korea's Unification Ministry said he was also ascertaining whether the report was true.
The trip has not been announced yet, but if it goes off as planned, it will mark the first time outsiders have been allowed inside the communist nations' main nuclear facilities since U.N. inspectors were expelled Dec.31, 2002.
