Inside North Korea
On April 28, Kim Jong Il, accompanied by General Lee Myung Soo, inspected military unit 318 of the Korean People's Army (KPA) and watched performances given by family members of the KPA unit 287 in a cultural competition held amongst family members of the servicemen. On May 1, he paid another inspection visit to the KPA unit 824, honored with the title of "Kumsong Lifeguard," and stressed that "the servicemen should dedicate themselves to becoming worshippers of a military-first principle, promoters of a military-first politics and advocates of a military-first revolutionary line." |

To mark the 113th May Day, North Korea held a central "report session" at the Kim Jong Tae Electric Locomotive Plant. The participants in the session stressed that "the most important mission for all the proletariat and the people is to protect the revolutionary leadership with a death-defying resolve." The session was attended by Hong Song Nam, premier of the DPRK cabinet, Kim Joong Rin, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, and Yom Sun Gil, chairman of the Central Committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea. |

Rodong Shinmun propagandized on May 4 that "People's Life Bonds," which have been issued to the public since May 1, "are being purchased enthusiastically by people throughout the nation." |
International Issues
In a Foreign Ministry statement, the North Korean government stated on April 30 that "if the U.S. brings the nuclear issue to the United Nations and exploits the U.N.'s name to its advantage, we will have no choice but to consider emergency measures to cope with an unpredictable situation." |

its editorial on May 1, Minju Josun condemned
Japan, arguing that "Japan's Defense
Ministry's remark that it plans to fundamentally
reexamine its main defense-buildup plans
in response to new threats are part of a
scheme to possess offensive capabilities"
and "such remarks are tantamount to
a sly and deceitful strategy to justify
its move to emerge as a military power and
to realize its expansionist ambitions overseas."

Inter-Korean Issues
The
North Korean Central Broadcasting Station
propagandized on April 29 that "the
anti-U.S. struggles being staged by the
people of South Korea nowadays is unprecedented
in terms of scale, duration and intensity"
and "all people from different classes
and backgrounds, from organizations with
dissimilar orientations should join in these
anti-U.S. struggles." |

A North Korean patrol boat crossed the Northern Limit Line 0.8 miles east of Baekryung Island in the process of cracking down on a Chinese fishing boat which had infringed on North Korean waters at 9:46am on May 3. The North Korean boat returned back to North Korea's territorial waters at around 10:00 am. |
