North Korea Weekly (February 24 - March 2, 2003)
Inside North Korea
Rodong Shinmun
stressed on February 24 that "the army
and the people will faithfully uphold Comrade
Kim Jong Il's ideology and achievements
today and tomorrow, eternally singing the
revolutionary songs in an effort to worship
the Leader and to defend the Leader with
our lives." |
|
In an editorial
on the 84th anniversary of the 'March 1
Popular Uprising,' Rodong Shinmun claimed
that "the current confrontational structure
on the Korean peninsula is one in which
Korean people are in a standoff with the
U.S." and called on all Korean people
"to participate in the struggle to
crush the U.S. imperialists' anti-DPRK nuclear
racket and to counteract its war moves against
the DPRK." |
|
On March 2, a meeting was held by the activists participating in a campaign to attain the title of "O Jung Hup's Seventh Regiment of the Korean People's Army." Calls were made in the meeting to "develop the army to become the 'human rifles and bombs,' which would defend the top leadership of the revolution with the life of each serviceperson." The meeting was attended by such figures as Jo Myong Rok, director of the General Political Department of the Korean People's Army (KPA), Kim Yong Chun, chief of KPA general staff, and Kim Il Chol, Minister of the People's Armed Forces. |
International Issues
The
spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry on
February 25 made the baseless claim that
"the Korean Peninsula is under extreme
tension as a result of the massive joint
military exercises held in South Korea by
the U.S. and South Korean armed forces." |
|
Regarding
the resolution adopted at the nonaligned
summit meeting, held from February 20 to
February 25 in Kuala Lumpur, the spokesperson
for the Foreign Ministry claimed in a press
conference on February 28 that "the
adoption of the resolution, which denounces
unjust attempts by the U.S. to bring the
Korean nuclear issue to a multilateral framework,
is a fair reflection of the position of
the international community regarding the
nuclear issue." |
Inter-Korean Issues
Democratic
National United Front Broadcasting, a malicious
anti-South propaganda media outlet, propagandized
on February 25 that "a relentless struggle
must be waged to free the members of Hanchongryon
(South Korean Federation of University Student
Councils) arrested by the South Korean authorities"
and that "this struggle must consequently
be linked to the abolishment of South Korea's
National Security Law." |
|
Korea Central
Broadcasting Agency reported on February
26 that "according to news reports,
President Kim Dae Jung retired from office
and President-elected Roh Moo Hyun was officially
inaugurated as the 16th president of South
Korea in the inaugural ceremony which took
place in South Korea on Feb. 25." |
|
Korea Central Broadcasting Agency reported on March 2 that "'The March 1 National Meeting for Peace and Reunification' was held in Seoul on March 1 and that 'The March 1 National Declaration,' was jointly adopted at the meeting." |
