In an effort
to create a festive mood for Kim Jong Il's
upcoming sixty-first birthday on February
16, North Korea hosted various events such

the youth exploration of 'Mt. Paektu secret
camp'" and the "Kim Jong Il Flower
Exhibit hosted by the Ministry of People's

International Issues
Korea
Central News Agency maintained on February
5 that "the review of a plan by the
U.S. to send another aircraft carrier to
the waters off the Korean Peninsula and
the U.S. decision to increase its military
power on the Korean Peninsula is a testimony
to the fact that the U.S. is now entering
the implementation phase of its military
plan to strike North Korea. Our military
and people will respond with strong measures
to defend our nation." |
|
The
spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry claimed
in the press conference on February 5 that
"the attempt made by the U.S., in the
name of IAEA, to bring our nuclear issue
to the U.N. Security Council for discussion
lacks fairness and we will not accept it." |
Inter-Korean Issues
The
North Korean Central Broadcasting Station
(KCNA) reported on "the experimental
overland tours of Mt. Kumgang" on February
5, saying that "Jong Mong Hon, president
of Hyundai Asan, and Kim Yun Gyu, managing
director of Hyundai Asan, made the first
experimental overland excursion by crossing
the demilitarized zone, together with over
80 other related South Korean persons." |
|
Democratic National
United Front Broadcasting, a malicious anti-South
propaganda media outlet, criticized South
Korea by making baseless accusations that
"amidst the disturbances caused by
the Grand National Party (GNP) regarding
the remittances to the North, the absurd
remarks made by the former South Korean
president Kim Young Sam that the remittances
are illegal actions which benefit only the
North and that they should be subject to
punishment by law are unacceptable acts
of betrayal which hinder inter-Korean cooperation
while promoting confrontation." |
|
The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station maintained that "as the imperialist U.S. blatantly embarks on a campaign of war against North Korea, it is increasingly becoming clear that the confrontation on the Korean Peninsula is based on confrontation between the Korean people and the U.S." |
