P'yang Proposes Trial Overland Tour of Mt. Geumgang This Month

2003-02-03

North Korea's Asia-Pacific Peace Committee has proposed a trial overland tour of Mt. Geumgang by South Koreans take place Feb. 4-14, the North Korean Central News Agency reported over the weekend.

A survey of the envisioned route and test overland tour under which the tourists would travel through the Demilitarized Zone could start from Tuesday, the North's state-run media said.

The organization called on Hyundai Asan chairman Chung Mong-hun and president Kim Yoon-kyu to become the first to cross the border as the company has been the main player in the Mt. Geumgang project and in the construction of an industrial complex in Gaeseong.

A spokesman of the North's organization said the opening of a new route across the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone will become a landmark event for the promotion of cooperation and exchanges between the Koreas.

"It has been the organization's constant position to step up the inter-Korean cooperative project in line with the spirit of the historic inter-Korean summit," the spokesman said.
