Meeting held for reconnection of inter-Korean rail and road links

    Pyongyang, January 25 (KCNA) -- The second meeting of the panel for reconnection of inter-Korean rail and road links took place here from Jan. 22 to 25. At the meeting the north and the south sides of Korea referred to the fact that ground-breaking ceremonies were held in September last year to reconnect inter-Korean rail and road links and various preparations for the project have been pushed forward.
    Both sides had an in-depth discussion on the practical matters of speeding up the project in the basic spirit of the historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, and adopted the following agreement:
    The north and the south of Korea agree to start the project for reconnecting the east and west coastal railways in each side's area from the military demarcation line and reconnect the rails of each side at the earliest date.
    Its details such as the points of reconnecting rail links in sections shall be discussed and decided later.
    The north and the south shall render active cooperation in the efforts to ensure that equipment and materials needed for the project of reconnecting west and east coastal rail and road links, including those for laying rails, are provided ahead of schedule.
    The first batch of equipment and materials, equipment and materials for laying rail, etc. shall be provided by sea and land.
    The north and the south exchanged the "basic agreement on train service between the north and the south" and reached a consensus of views on most of the issues, and shall agree to adopt it by exchanging documents at an early date.
    Both sides shall continue to discuss at working contacts and through the exchange of documents such matters as opening train and wagon service offices, signals, communications and on-site survey for the designing of a power system.
    A program of the third meeting of this panel shall be discussed and adopted at future working contacts.
