North Korea Weekly (November 17 - 23, 2003)

Inside North Korea

Rodong Sinmun published an editorial titled "Let us keep up the determined fight for victory," in which it propagandized, "We shall wage all-out campaigns to mobilize all propagandizing resources and means to ensure the success of the last fight of the year and to achieve the feat of establishing a strong and invincible nation."

The Central Broadcasting Station quoted the remarks of Deputy Minister of Municipal Administration Pak Kyong Bong, "This year sees remarkable achievements in the repair of public buildings and of construction, including 172,000 houses and 17,300 public buildings, and 41,126,400 square meters of roads."

International Issues

The Central Broadcasting Station accused the U.S., quoting the information bulletin No. 852 issued by the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland dated Nov. 18, claiming, "The United States' forceful military presence in South Korea is for the sake of advancing its own interests. Therefore, the U.S. should not seek to perpetuate its military presence in South Korea under any absurd pretext."

The Central Broadcasting Station reported, "A treaty of cooperation in the enforcement of the civil and criminal laws was signed between the DPRK and the People's Republic of China on November 19. Among DPRK representatives present at the ceremony were members of the DPRK legal delegation led by Kim Pyong Ryul, chief justice of the Central Court of the DPRK."

The Central Broadcasting Station reported, "A political dialogue between the delegations of the foreign ministries of the DPRK and Switzerland was held in Pyongyang on Nov. 17. Discussed in the dialogue was the issue of the furthering of bilateral relations and other matters of mutual concern."

Inter-Korean Issues

On the occasion of the 13th anniversary of the National Alliance for the Country's Reunification (Pomminryon), Rodong Sinmun said in its editorial on Nov. 20, "Pomminryon should join forces with various reunification groups at home and abroad to wage mighty struggles against the National Security Law of South Korea and its assumptions that cast Pyongyang as its sworn enemy."

The Central Broadcasting Station blasted Seoul, quoting a statement issued on Nov. 20 by the (North) Korean Committee for Saving Unconverted Long-Term Prisoners in South Korea, "The South Korean authorities do not allow unconverted long-term prisoners to tour Mt. Kumgang, which is a clear violation of the spirit of the historic June 15 North-South Joint Declaration and an intolerable, inhumane act."
