Inside North Korea

Kim Jong Il expressed deep condolences over the death of U Chi Son, a ceramist of the Mansudae Art Studio, and sent a wreath of flowers.

The Central Broadcasting Station propagandized on Nov. 8, "With the Songun politics, today's DPRK is armed with strong military capabilities, keeping up the good fight against the colonial super power. The international status of the DPRK increases every day."

The Central Broadcasting Station reported on Nov. 7, "a ceremony was held to launch a 3000-ton floating dock made with the DPRK's own technology, equipment and materials. The ceremony was attended by officials and workers of related sectors (date, place and name of the dockyard unreported)."

International Issues

The Pyongyang Broadcasting Station stressed on Nov. 3, "The most fundamental condition for DPRK-Japan relations is for Japan to redress its past wrongdoings. Therefore, if Japan avoids doing so while implementing its hostile policies against the DPRK, Pyongyang-Tokyo relations will spiral out of control."

A KCNA briefing was held on Nov. 6 regarding the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO)'s decision to suspend construction of the light water reactors (LWR). A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry made an unreasonable claim, "the U.S. and KEDO must compensate for the losses caused by their not implementing the agreement to supply light water reactors to the DPRK. Until this issue is resolved, we will not allow them to remove any equipment, facilities, materials, or technical documents from the Kumho area."

Inter-Korean Issues

The DPRK's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland and the Democratic National United Front issued a statement on Nov. 7 regarding the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, saying, "the ROK-US Combined Forces Command is the very root of all the misfortunes and suffering of our nation. People in South Korea are urged to fight for a complete dismantling and withdrawal of the invader's institute."

The Central Broadcasting Station reported on Nov. 8, "the two Koreas held the seventh meeting of the Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Committee in Pyongyang from Nov. 5-8 and adopted the seven-point agreement."
