Achievements in Researches into Cell and Gene Engineering

    Pyongyang, November 24 (KCNA) -- The Branch Academy of Cell and Gene Engineering under the Academy of Sciences of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has achieved many successes in researches. In recent years, they developed a method of virus-free potato tissue culture, a method of extensively propagating various species of saplings and a method of culturing gene extracted from human growth hormone in microorganism and separating and purifying it. They also made peroxidase and 19 other kinds of enzymes needed in researches into gene engineering.
    A progress has also been made in researches for cultivating transgenic plants, obtaining useful materials such as growth hormone from microorganism made in a way of gene engineering and deciding the base arrangement order of gene.
    The branch academy in Taesong District, Pyongyang, was founded in June Juche 80 (1991).
    It has departments specializing in researches into subdivided fields of cell and gene engineering and is fully equipped with up-to-date research facilities including a base arrangement analyzer.
    An average age of the researchers is 35 and 40 percent of the employees were honored with academic degrees or titles.
    The branch academy is directing great efforts to training experts and gathering information through manifold interchange with authoritative institutes of cell and gene engineering of different countries including Germany, Russia and China.
    Chief of the branch academy Ho Kwang Chun told KCNA that though its history is not long, it has fully demonstrated its ability by developing up-to-the-minute science and technologies.
    He is convinced that it will rank among the world's famous institutes of cell and gene engineering in the near future by concentrating on the training of experts and scientific researches.
