Strengthened Cooperation with UNESCO Stressed

Pyongyang, October 8 (KCNA) -- The DPRK government will further strengthen cooperation with UNESCO and all its member states, true to its foreign policy based on the idea of independence, peace and friendship, to positively contribute to international efforts for world peace, declared the head of the DPRK delegation on October 3, speaking at the 32nd meeting of the General Conference of UNESCO.
The DPRK in recent years has made enormous efforts to decisively raise the quality of education and the level of up-to-date science and technology to meet the requirements of the era of IT industry in the new century according to its policy of attaching importance to education and science while treasuring and preserving well cultural legacies of the nation and national tradition, he said.
Affirmatively appreciating the activities of UNESCO in the last period under review, he urged the organization to pay due attention in its plan for the new period to finding a more practical and concrete way to ensure fairness and balance in its overall work such as cooperation among its member states and, especially, to increasing the abilities of the developing countries.
He expressed the belief that UNESCO would fulfil its responsibility and role as an intellectual organization in accomplishing the common cause of humankind for peace, development and equality in the new period, too.
Noting that the solution to the nuclear issue between the DPRK and U.S. stands out as a matter of greatest urgency for peace and security of the Korean peninsula, the region and the rest of the world, he said: It is a consistent stand of the DPRK government to settle the nuclear issue peacefully through dialogue and negotiations.
The DPRK government and people will implement the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration to the end to achieve national reconciliation, unity and reunification and contribute to peace and security of the region and the world, he stated.
