North Korea Weekly (September 15- 21, 2003)

Inside North Korea

The Central Broadcasting Station reported, "The 8th National Symposium on Information, Science and Technology was held  at Grand People's Study Hall, Sept. 15-16. The symposium was attended by scientists, engineers and teachers from  educational institutes across the nation."

The Central Broadcasting Station stressed, "As long as our enemies continue their attempts to invade us, the only way left for us is to resort to  "Son-gun (military-first)" strategy. We must thoroughly implement the appeal issued at the Son-gun Hero's Rally on Sept. 5-6."

International Issues

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said in a statement released on the occasion of the first anniversary of "Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration" on Sept. 16, "In order to normalize DPRK-Japan relations, Japan must first resolve the issues related to its past grave human rights violation such as atrocities committed during wartime and its colonial rule and the comfort women among many others". The statement went on to add that the DPRK's will to implement the Declaration remains the same.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson commented on Israel's decision to expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, "The DPRK hopes that Israel back down its decision to expel Yasser Arafat and withdraw its troops from the forcefully occupied land of Palestine, thereby Palestine nation be established with Yasser Arafat as its head in the near future."

The Central Broadcasting Station criticized the U.S., saying, " In a bid to force us to renounce our nuclear weapons program, the U.S. is conducting PSI(Proliferation Security Initiative), mobilizing multinational forces as a means to contain and sanction the DPRK."

Inter-Korean Issues

Rodong Sinmun criticized Seoul by saying, "The South Korean authorities must seriously think about the grave consequences of dispatching its combat troops to Iraq, which is an act that betrays the nation. Seoul must flatly reject the U.S. request to dispatch additional troops to Iraq."

The Secretariat of the DPRK Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherlands asserted in its press release No. 848 on Sept. 19, "The provocation against us such as allocating patriot-3 missiles by the U.S. imperialist troops that have invaded and forcefully occupied the South convinces us that we have no choice but to beef up our self-defense measures."
