Meeting of Heroes and Heroines in Songun Era Opens

    Pyongyang, September 5 (KCNA) -- The meeting of heroes and heroines in the Songun era was opened with splendor at the April 25 House of Culture here today. The meeting, the third in the history of the DPRK, marks a historic gathering as it offers an occasion of glorifying forever the immortal Songun revolutionary exploits leader Kim Jong Il has performed on behalf of the times and revolution and demonstrating the invincible stamina of Songun Korea where the leadership of the revolution, the single-hearted unity and socialism form a community linked by the same destiny.
    Present there were senior officials of the Party, the state and the army.
    Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, read out a congratulatory message of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and the Central Military Commission of the WPK to the participants in the meeting.
    The message highly praised the participants, all the servicemen of the Korean People's Army and the people for exalting our glorious era with a heroic struggle and exploits true to the WPK's Songun leadership and called upon all of them to perform heroic exploits who glorify the Songun era. Jo Myong Rok, first vice-chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK and director of the KPA General Political Department, in a report at the meeting said that the tradition of heroic struggle which was established and has been enriched decade after decade since the start of our revolution under the leadership of President Kim Il Sung has been successfully carried forward and its embodiment has significantly gained in scope and depth in the Songun era led by Kim Jong Il.
    The unique Songun politics set out by Kim Jong Il has become the most revolutionary political mode which helps the entire army and all the people fully display matchless heroism and self-sacrificing spirit, he said, and continued:
    The KPA servicemen and the people, in hearty response to the WPK's Songun politics, have performed many new heroic feats and worked miracles to glorify the Songun era.
    As the country holds Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il in high esteem, it always witnesses heroic events, heroic spirit prevails in the whole society and a large contingent of heroes and heroines emerges. As a result, the DPRK becomes a country of heroes and heroines while its army emerges an heroic army and its people a heroic people.
    Calling for successfully fulfilling the tasks before the revolution, he underscored the need for all the people to unite close around Kim Jong Il, resolutely foil the imperialists' moves to isolate and stifle the DPRK and perform new heroic feats in the efforts to build a great prosperous powerful socialist nation under the uplifted banner of Songun.
    He also underlined the need to enshrine Kim Jong Il's unique Songun idea as unshakable faith and ardently follow it and resolutely uphold and implement the Songun politics, always thinking and behaving as required by it.
    We heroes and heroines should regard the development of the national defence industry as a key link in the efforts to increase the state power and take the lead in building a strong military deterrent force by giving priority to this industry as required by the Songun era, he said.
    The heroes and heroines should also take the lead in the drive to further increase the country's economic potential, bring about a surge in production and improve the standard of the people's living by implementing to the last the important economic policies set forth by the Party and steps taken by it in recent years, he added, underscoring the need for all the heroes and heroines to fulfill their revolutionary obligations to foil the obstructive moves of the separatists at home and abroad by the concerted efforts of the nation and accelerate the historic cause of national reunification upholding the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration as the banner of the great march for national reunification.
    If the U.S. bellicose forces ignite a war of aggression in disregard of our repeated warnings, we heroic fighters, with high anti-imperialist class awareness, will give vent to the pent-up grudge against the U.S. imperialists, their sworn enemy, and deal deadly blows, more powerful than a nuclear strike, at them and become honorable victors in the confrontation with the U.S., he warned.
