Paekma-Cholsan Waterway Makes Headway

Pyongyang, August 21 (KCNA) -- The Paekma-Cholsan waterway project is making headway in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The builders have done hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of concrete tamping and hundreds of meters of tunneling over last four months or little more.
More than 1,200 structures such as underdrains, open channels and culverts have come into shape.
The natural-flow waterway, designed to improve the irrigation system in the western part of the country, extends some 270 kilometers.
It will supply sufficient water to 46,000 hectares of farmlands in Phihyon, Ryongchon, Yomju, Tongrim and Cholsan counties and some areas of Sinuiju of North Phyongan Province.
Meanwhile, more than 260 pumping stations and 400 water pumps will be removed and tens of thousand kw of electricity saved.
Power stations will also be constructed along the waterway.
