Inside North Korea
The Central Broadcasting Station reported on July 22 that "Comrade Kim Jong Il visited military unit 292 of the Korean People's Army (KPA) and expressed his satisfaction over the training of the servicemen to become aggressive and rugged fighters." The report went on to add that "Kim set forth important tasks which would serve as guidelines to further enhance the combat capacity of the unit." |

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Korean people's victory in the war to liberate the nation, Kim Jong Il, as the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA), issued an order on July 26, promoting commanding officers of the KPA to higher military ranks. A central "reporting session" was also held in front of the Fatherland Liberation War Victory Monument to celebrate the occasion. |
International Issues
In its editorial, Rodong Shinmun maintained that "the U.S. continues to oppose holding bilateral talks with the DPRK and signing a non-aggression pact, and, at the same time, insists on the DPRK's scrapping of its nuclear program first and meeting with the DPRK under a multilateral framework" and that "consequently, the situation on the Korean Peninsula will rapidly evolve into an unpredictable war situation." The editorial claimed that "the DPRK's position has always been that the nuclear issue will only be resolved through direct talks between the two countries on an equal footing and through the signing of a non-aggression pact." |

Pyongyang Broadcasting Station criticized Japan on July 22, saying that "Japan's 2003 Defense White Paper's claims regarding the modernization of the Self Defense Forces and the making of Japan as a military giant is a manifestation of deep-seated animosity militant Japanese have vis-a-vis the Koreans and of their ambition to reinvade Korea." |
Inter-Korean Issues
Democratic National United Front Broadcasting, a malicious, anti-South propaganda media outlet, propagandized on July 22 that "the internet is a powerful medium through which injustice and unreasonableness of the North Korean policy of the U.S. government may be effectively propagated" and "Korean youths and students should all fully utilize this medium to promote and heighten the spirit of anti-U.S., anti-war struggles and to engage people from all walks of life to actively participate in our cause." |

The North Korean Central Broadcasting Station made false accusations regarding Ulchi Focus Lens, which is a large-scale, routine military exercise between South Korea and the U.S., saying "Ulchi Focus Lens is a war exercise explicitly designed by the U.S. imperialists and war-mongering South Korean military to invade and militarily stifle North Korea." |
