Inside North Korea
Media outlets of the DPRK propagandized that "Kim Jong Il's nomination by the people and the Korean People's Army (KPA) servicemen as a candidate for deputy to the 11th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) is a display of absolute trust the people and the military have of Kim Jong Il." Kim Jong Il is reportedly being nominated as a candidate for deputy to the 11th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) in the electorate meetings of constituencies taking place across the country. |

On July 5, Kim Jong Il paid inspection visits to facilities and institutions in Ganggye City and expressed his hope that "the workers of Jagang Province will take up the role leading the effort to build a strong and powerful nation." Kim was accompanied by Kim Kuk Tae, secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Jang Song Taek and Choe Chun Hwang, first deputy directors of the WPK Central Committee, and Yon Hyung Muk, secretary of Workers' Party of Jagang Province. |
International Issues
In a statement issued by the Panmunjom mission of the KPA on July 1, the DPRK warned that "should the U.S. push ahead with the imposition of sea and air embargo vis-a-vis the DPRK and implement measures to build up arms on and around the Korean Peninsula, the DPRK will take up strong and merciless measures of retaliation." The DPRK has been strongly opposed to being the target of a sea and air embargo and to the U.S. military buildup on the peninsula. |

On July 5, the North Korean Central Broadcasting Station accused Japan of "fervently pursuing the establishment of the Missile Defense System (MD) under the pretext of a ballistic missile threat from the DPRK." The Central Broadcasting Station went on to add that "such attempt will only aggravate the situation on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia which is already tense as a result of nuclear problems." |
Inter-Korean Issues
In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Asia-Pacific Peace Committee on July 1, North Korea made groundless accusations that the announcement made by South Korea's special prosecutor on the result of investigation into the South Korean authorities' illicit remittances to North Korea "undermines the historical significance of June 2000 inter-Korean summit meeting in Pyongyang" and "amounts to an act which runs counter to reunification efforts and contravenes the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation." It also demanded that "the officials arraigned under charges of unlawful remittances be released." |

On July 6, the spokesperson for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland issued a statement on the designation by the South Korean Defense Ministry of the North Korean regime and the North Korean army as the "main enemy." In the statement North Korea made false claims that "the South Korean government's description of North Korea as the 'main enemy' is a testimonial to the fact that South Korea is pursuing confrontation and war" and "such position will inevitably lead to war and disaster." |
