NK Calls for Resolution of Nuke Issue
2003-07-18
North Korea's Chosun Central TV station called for a simultaneous resolution to the nuclear standoff surrounding the peninsula, the Yonhap News Agency reported on Thursday (July 17).
In a commentary received here Wednesday, the state-run TV station claimed the heightened tension is the result of Washington's policy to use the nuclear weapons development program to crush the integrity of North Korea. It also said the hard-line stance espoused by the United States was only making the situation worse.
The broadcast then said that the only viable way to diffuse the issue at hand was to resolve the North's nuclear deterrence abilities in exchange for the U.S. giving up its hostile policies towards Pyongyang.
"If we give up our nuclear development plans, the U.S. must show that it has discarded its confrontational stance toward us," the commentary said.
It added the U.S. insistence that the North must give up its nuclear capability first before any talks could begin was a shallow ploy to disarm the country prior to a military invasion.
