U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell says he expects to see diplomatic developments in the North Korean nuclear crisis in the very near future. Mr. Powell did not elaborate on what those developments might be, but he said the diplomatic track is "alive and well."
Speaking at the State Department Wednesday, Mr. Powell also said he discussed the deadlock over Pyongyang's nuclear program with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing in a telephone conversation early Wednesday. He says the Chinese foreign minister briefed him on Beijing's recent efforts to defuse the crisis.
China recently proposed multilateral talks that also would include bilateral discussions between Pyongyang and Washington. The United States has not commented publicly on Beijing's proposal. North Korea has insisted on direct negotiations with Washington.
Secretary Powell also confirmed reports the Bush administration is considering admitting North Korean refugees into the United States, but he said no formal proposal has been made.
