US Keeps Pursuing Multilateral Approach
2003-07-12
U.S. Ambassador to Korea Thomas C. Hubbard on Friday (July 11) stressed the importance of a coordinated, multilateral approach to handle the North Korean nuclear problem amidst the deepening nuclear row.
"The North Korean nuclear problem is an issue for the entire international community; it is only natural that we pursue a multilateral approach to resolving the matter," Hubbard said, speaking before managing editors of the Korean News Editors Association in Jeju Island.
The key to progress on the nuclear issue is to address it "with all of North Korea's neighbors in Northeast Asia presenting a common position to the North Korean regime," he added.
Thus, he stressed the importance of reinforcing the South Korea-U.S. alliance, which sees its 50th anniversary this year.
"The friendship of the Korean and American people has been reinforced by the strong personal relationship which President Roh and President Bush have established during their 'successful' summit in May," Hubbard said.
Urging the journalists to provide a more balanced picture of his country, the ambassador cited examples of humanitarian projects the U.S. conducts worldwide.
"The U.S. is already the world leader in humanitarian assistance and food aid, providing more than $3 billion in such assistance in 2000 alone," Hubbard said, adding that North Korea is high on the list of recipient countries.
