A published report says U.S. intelligence officials believe North Korea is developing the technology to make small nuclear warheads.
The New York Times newspaper Tuesday quotes senior officials as saying intelligence photos have identified an advanced nuclear testing site in North Korea. The newspaper says that some officials believe the site is evidence Pyongyang intends to develop a nuclear warhead small enough to fit on top of a medium and long-range missile.
In its report, the Times says Washington has shared this intelligence with Japan, South Korea and other allies in recent weeks.
A White House spokesman Tuesday declined comment on the Times report, but he said the Bush administration is concerned about North Korea's development of weapons of mass destruction.
For its part, North Korea Tuesday unleashed another burst of harsh rhetoric against Washington, warning that Pyongyang will retaliate if the United States and its allies impose sanctions or a blockade. In a statement carried by North Korean state-run media, Pyongyang again said it believes the United States is planning an Iraq-style pre-emptive attack.
