Inside North Korea

On October 1, the Korean Thanksgiving holiday of Chusok, senior party and state officials, Korean People's Army servicemen, and workers placed wreaths on the graves of Kim Bo Hyun and Lee Bo Ik (Kim Il Sung's grandparents) and Kim Hyung Jik and Kang Ban Seok (Kim Il Sung's parents), at the Patriotic Martyrs' Cemetery and the Mankyungdae.

On October 3, a National Foundation Day event was held in King Tangun's mausoleum in Kangdong County, Pyongyang, with guests including Kim Young Dae, Chairman of the Central Committee of the Korean Social Democratic Party, Ryu Mi Young, Chairperson of the Chondogyo Young Friends Party, Oh Ik Je, Vice President of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, and Yeo Won Gu, President of the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland.

Regarding International Issues

In its October 2 commentary, the Rodong Sinmun argued, "The decision of the three Japanese ruling parties to substantially relax criteria for the use of force by the Self-Defense Forces is an attempt to realize its old ambition to dominate Asia."

On October 4, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station blasted the U.S. for "its 5-billion-dollar plan to modernize nuclear weapons production facilities over the next ten years," and argued, "What the U.S. truly seeks is to realize its hegemonic aspirations with nuclear sticks."

Regarding the U.S. War on Terrorism

In its October 3 commentary, the Rodong Sinmun stressed, "Japan's Self-Defense Forces accompanied the U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk, which departed from the Yokosuka naval base on September 21. Japanese militarists have finally revealed their true colors and are moving toward aggressive military operations."

On October 4, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station denounced the U.S. for "its scheme to reinforce its air force in South Korea to fill the so-called military vacuum left by the deployment of the Kitty Hawk in the Middle East. The action will put a brake on the implementation of the June 15 DPRK-ROK Joint Declaration."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues

On October 4, the KCNA reported, "according to the agreement of the fifth round of North-South senior-level talks, bilateral government talks for discussions on how to promote the Mt. Kumkang tour were held at the Mt. Kumkang Resort on October 4."

On October 6, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station falsely reported that "70-million North and South Korean people worship and follow Kim Jong Il, who is the focal point of national unity, and who made the North-South Joint Declaration possible to open an era of independent reunification for the nation. The people are optimistic about the dawning of a new unified Korea."
