Major Developments in North Korea (September 24-30, 2001)

Inside North Korea

National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong Il gave field guidance at a catfish plant under the Korean People's Army Unit No. 534 on September 23, and wrote a letter to workers of terraced power plants in the Seongchun River on September 26, congratulating their success in "building 33 small and medium-sized power stations in such a short time."

On September 24, film industry workers held a rally to further the cinematic accomplishments of Kim Jong Il. On September 28, urban workers held a rally calling for thorough implementation of the directions given by Kim Jong Il during his September 14-15 visit to the South Hamkyung Province. On the same day, the National Athletic Contest of Workers was held at the May 1 Gymnasium on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the Worker's Party of Korea.

Regarding International Issues

On September 26, the Rodong Sinmun said, "The imperialist U.S. is conducting war exercises to realize its ambition to invade Korea, and Japanese reactionaries are scheming to re-invade Asia."

In its September 29 commentary, the KCNA stated, "The IAEA Director General remarked during the September 17 IAEA annual conference that he was unable to confirm the accuracy of Pyongyang's nuclear program. He is dancing to the tune of the U.S., trying to shift the responsibility for non-compliance with the U.S.-DPRK Agreed Framework onto North Korea."

Regarding the U.S. War on Terrorism

In its September 24 commentary, the Rodong Sinmun denounced Japan for "staging exercises in anticipation of terrorist attacks on Japan" and argued, "What Japan truly seeks is to peg North Korea as a terrorist nation by riding on the back of the complex international situation."

On September 28, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station quoted foreign reports in its detailed coverage of U.S. retaliatory military actions, commenting, "The international community is expressing serious concerns about the U.S. pursuit of military retaliation."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues

On September 24, Pyongyang Broadcasting Station propagandized, "The U.S. and its followers are bringing cold winds of confrontation and division to Korea. The real situation demands that North and South Korea join forces to destroy their scheme."

On September 26, the Pyongyang Broadcasting Station Station argued, "We have tried our best to achieve national reconciliation, solidarity, and peaceful reunification. It was largely thanks to our initiative that the inter-Korean senior-level talks resumed in six months."
