Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Major Developments in North Korea (September 17-23, 2001)

Inside North Korea

National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong Il inspected the Korean People's Army Unit No. 535 and No. 211 (September 18), and visited the Kim Chaek University of Technology (September 19), as well as a military dog-training camp under the Ministry of People's Security (September 20). On September 21, he attended the Competition for Cultural and Artistic Creators.

On September 20, North Korea hosted the Republic Basketball Championship Competition in the Basketball Gymnasium on Youth Street in Pyongyang. The event has been held annually since 1975.

Regarding International Issues

On September 22, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station argued, "The U.S. is talking about a North Korean missile threat based on nothing in order to walk away from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and to place checks on Russia and China to achieve its ambition for world domination."

Regarding the U.S. War on Terrorism

On September 18, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station commented quoting foreign news reports, "The U.S. is strengthening moves toward military retaliation for the September 11 attacks, which is causing great suspicion and alarm around the world."

On September 23, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station slammed Japan for "its decision to use the Maritime Self-Defense Force to provide logistical support for U.S. retaliatory operations," and argued, "What Japan truly seeks is to realize its criminal expansionist aspirations."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues

On September 18, the Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported, "President Kim Dae Jung received the North Korean delegation to the fifth round of inter-Korean ministerial talks scheduled in Seoul September 15-18, and a joint statement was issued by the two sides."

On September 23, the Broadcasting Station of the National Democratic Front of South Korea, a mud-slinging anti-South Korea propaganda organization created by North Korea, denounced South Korea for the September 21 arrest and indictment of Professor Kang Jeong Ku of Dongkuk University. It described the arrest as a "violent abuse of the freedom of thought and expression harking back to the fascist dictatorship era." Professor Kang had been charged with leaving messages that praised North Korea in the Mankyungdae guest book.
