 Major Developments in North Korea (July 2-8, 2001)

On July 7, National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong Il provided field guidance to the Ryujong Collective Farm in Taetan-gun, South Hwanghae Province, and the Jaechon Collective Farm in Jaeryong-gun. Party secretary Kim Kuk Tae, Party Propaganda and Agitation Minister Jeong Ha Chul, and Korean People's Army General Hyun Chul Hae accompanied Kim Jong Il. On July 8, Kim Jong Il provided field guidance to the Cigarette Complex, Kyungryun Patriotic Cider Plant and Pyongyang Children's Food Plant.

At 12:00 p.m. July 8, on the 7th anniversary of the demise of Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, Kim Young Chun, Chief of the General Staff of the People's Armed Forces, and Kim Il Chul, Minister of People's Armed Forces, paid homage to Kim Il Sung at the Kumsusan Memorial Palace. Party and state officials, foreign diplomatic representatives to Pyongyang, and military officials also visited the Kumsuan Memorial Palace to pay homage to the deceased leader.

Regarding International Issues  
 

On July 7, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson told the KCNA, "If the U.S. does not show commitment to improving DPRK-US relations and uses Hwang Jang Yop for clown shows, already deteriorating bilateral relations will chill further."

The party newspaper Rodong Sinmun argued in its July 7 commentary titled, "Japan's Ambition to Reinvade Korea Remains Unchanged," that, "The recent moves by Japan's Defense Agency to revamp laws on security areas reveal that their expansionist aspirations remain unchanged."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues
 

On July 2, the Broadcasting Station of the National Democratic Front of South Korea propagandized that the "Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and labor activists must form a solidarity with farmers, young students, journalists, and people from all walks of life to wage a nationwide struggle to sabotage the South Korean daily newspaper, the Chosun Ilbo."

The party newspaper Rodong Sinmun stressed in its editorial marking the 29th anniversary of the announcement of the July 4 North-South Joint Declaration, "Through the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration, Kim Jong Il has implemented the reunification ideologies and instructions of Kim Il Sung, and paved the way for achieving independent national reunification in a way that meets the challenges of the new times. It is the greatest accomplishment in the history of reunification movement."
