Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Major Developments in North Korea (June 18-24, 2001)

On June 19, National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong Il saw the performance of military family art groups from Unit No. 567 of the Korean People's Army (KPA), which had just returned from concert tours around frontline units. KPA General Hyun Chul Hae and Park Jae Kyung accompanied Kim Jong Il. On June 21, Kim Jong Il inspected KPA Unit No. 983 and provided field guidance to a catfish plant built by the KPA Large Combined Unit No. 567.

Pyongyang citizens held mass rallies and anti-America demonstrations in Kim Il Sung Square to mark the 51st anniversary of the June 25 Struggle Against U.S. Imperialism. Present were workers from party, state, and social groups, as well as servicemen from the KPA, Navy, and Air Force. Yang Man Kil, President of the Pyongyang People's Committee reported, "The June 25 war was war of invasion intentionally provoked by the U.S. imperialists.

Regarding International Issues

Regarding the U.S. President's announcement of his intention to resume talks with North Korea on June 6, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a statement on June 18, arguing, "The negotiation agenda put forth by the U.S. including discussion of nuclear capability, missiles, and conventional force reduction are unacceptable conditions for negotiations. Conventional force reduction cannot be a subject of discussion until the withdrawal of U.S. forces from South Korea, and should be preceded by compensation for damages caused by the delays in LWR construction."

On June 24, the party newspaper Rodong Sinmun printed a commentary titled, "Tenacious Ambition for Re-Invasion," and argued, "Japanese reactionaries are accelerating the development of military surveillance satellites targeted at us and working towards re-invasion. This will only pull Japan deeper into the swamp of death."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues

On June 20, the Broadcasting Station of National Democratic Front of South Korea Broadcasting, an anti-South Korea mud-slinging propaganda media outlet, slammed the South Korean police for "ordering the arrest of Dan Byung Ho, President of the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions, and some 59 participants in labor demonstrations in a meeting of investigation and security directors of regional police departments. It is a scheme to destroy KCTU."

On June 21, the Broadcasting Station of National Democratic Front of South Korea Broadcasting, an anti-South Korea mud-slinging propaganda media outlet, propagandized, "In the run-up to the first anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration, there are growing demands for abolishing the National Security Law. It makes no sense for South Korea to discuss reconciliation and national reunification when the National Security Law is still an active presence. People from all walks of life must wage bold struggles to eliminate the law."
