 Major Developments in North Korea (May 21-27, 2001)

On May 23, National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong Il saw the Art Group performance of military families of KPA Unit No. 324. On May 24, he inspected KPA Unit No. 173 and provided field guidance to Hamheung City Youth Ranch. On May 25, he saw the art group performance of military families of KPA Unit No. 243. He also visited the Shinheung area (date N/A).

North Korean news media reported, "Prolonged draught has lowered the water depth in hydroelectric power plants, which led to the shortage of electricity for farming," urging plants and enterprises to "strictly follow cross-production organizations to save electricity."

Regarding International Issues  
 

On May 23, North Korea officially announced the establishment of diplomatic relations with Bahrain through the KCNA.

In its May 26 issue, the Rodong Shinmun editorialized, "The U.S. is plotting to organize two mobility combat brigades by next year that can be deployed in four days should contingencies occur on the Korean peninsula. It is an attempt to perfect invasive armed forces to provoke war against North Korea."

Regarding Inter-Korean Issues
 

On May 24, the KCNA blasted ROK-US special joint training and East Sea submarine structure training, commenting, "U.S. war-mongers and South Korean military authorities are engaging in military exercise to invade and confront North Korea."

In its May 27 editorial, the Rodong Shinmun propagandized, "The Confederation Reunification System is a scientific method based on a realistic consideration of the significant possibility that different ideologies and institutions may co-exist in one nation. All the people should unite as one person to achieve reunification through the Confederation method."
