In North Korea

Chairman of the North Korea's Military Commission Kim Jong-il visited KPA Unit 655 and its Women's Artillery Company with KPA Politburo chief Cho Myoung-rok and JCS chairman Kim Young-choon on Feb. 7th.

Preparatory festivities such as the Celebratory Choir Competition, the Central Photograph Exhibition, the Central Arts Exhibition, the Mt. Paektu Athletic Competition, and other grand events were held in North Korea in an effort to build up the atmosphere for the eventual celebration of Chairman Kim's birthday on Feb. 16.
The official party organ, The Worker's Daily, emphasized in an article on Feb, 06 that indoctrination and other efforts must be redoubled and strengthened in order to `prevent cultural and ideological infiltration by imperialist forces'.

The diplomatic front

The Worker's Daily blasted American plans to push ahead with the National Missile Defense program and consequent deployment of advanced weaponry, claiming that the plan, coupled with US basing of nuclear weapons in East Asia, would lead to `lead to a renewed arms race'.
North Korea established formal diplomatic relations with Canada (Feb. 06) followed by Spain (Feb. 07).

Inter-Korean Issues

The first conference of the Committee of Electrical Cooperation, a subcommittee under the aegis of the Action Committee for Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation was held in Pyongyang on Feb. 07 through the 10th.
Pyongyang Broadcasting stated in a broadcast on Feb. 07 that `the unification of our fatherland can be achieved peacefully provided that the process proceed according to the modified confederacy plan'.
