Central broadcasting, Pyongyang broadcasting and central TV in the North reported in detail on Jan.20 that defense committee chairman Kim Jong-il made an official visit to China Jan. 15-20 on the invitation of president Kang Tak-min.

In domestic news:

Rodong shinmun commentary (Jan.16) emphasized that "we have to honor the party's science-oriented ideology, intensify the saving struggle, and see to it that leaders of economic sectors produce business accomplishments."
On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Kim Il-sung socialist youth union's foundation (Jan. 17, 1946), a youth soldiers' loyalty resolution meeting was held at Kumsusan commemorative palace square with Chosun peoples army general political bureau chief Cho Myong-rok, peoples military forces division head Kim Il-chul, and military youth union secretary Oh, Sung-il attending.

In international news:

Central broadcasting (Jan.16) reported that a joint press release was announced (Jan 15) at The Hague, Netherlands, with regard to establishing diplomatic relations.
Minju-chosun (Jan.16) complained that the fact that a Japanese ambassador in the U.S. urged the unofficial secretary of state of the new administration to intensify the Japan-U.S. alliance is a "foolish delusion signifying the intensified preparation for an anti-Republic invasive war."

In connection with North-South issues:

The North Korean farmers and laborers union chairman, through a statement supporting the 2001 Pyongyang meeting, insisted South Korean farmers organizations and farmers be sure to respond actively to the decision to set Jun.15- Aug.15 as the national unification promotion period.
Central broadcasting (Jan. 17), in connection with South Korea's mid-winter war tactical drill of the metropolitan defense command (Jan.15-20), reported "war exercises by South Korean soldiers, carried out amid voices being raised supporting and implementing the North-South joint declaration, are causing discontent among residents."
