Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

WEEKLY NK NEWS (2000.10.9 - 2000.10.15)

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visited the Keumsusan Memorial Hall (Elder Kim's mausoleum) with North Korea's political heavyweights including Kim Young-nam, Hong Songnam, and Kim Young-choon in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the founding of the (North) Korean Worker's Party on Oct. 10th, and also attended the military and mass parade held at the Kim Il-sung Square on the same day.

North Korean government also celebrated the opening of the Pyongyang-Nampo Expressway on Oct. 11th, and the expressway was officially christened the Road of the Young Heroes.

On the diplomatic front, chief of the KPA politburo and special emissary to the US Cho Myung-rok visited the US from Oct. 9th to the 12th. Cho met with US president Bill Clinton (Oct. 10) and delivered the personal letter from Kim Jong-il, and the diplomatic visited ended with a DPRK (North Korea) - US Joint Communique on Oct. 12th.

In inter-Korean news, North Korea extended official invitation to forty-two South Korean members of political parties, social organizations, and select individuals to the official celebrations for the 55th anniversary of the founding of the (North) Korean Worker's Party. Along with the invitations, North Korea made a surprising statement that even persons `guilty' of what it refers to as acts of `anti-unification' and anti-communism had no reason to abstain from seeking a unification under the confederate system, and that all persons should be allowed to contribute to unification to the best of his or her abilities.
