Chairman of the North Korean National Defense Commission Kim Jong-il was in North Hamkyung province and personally supervised the province's industrial policies and activities for the first two days of August, accompanied by Supervising Secretary for North Hamkyung Lee Keun-mo, Party Secretary Kim Kuktae, State Planning Commission Park Namki, and the Worker's Party Deputy Bureau Chiefs Park Song-bong, Lee Yong-chol, Chang Song-taek, in addition to relevant officials and personnel.

The Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the North Korean Worker's Party announced a new nationwide `slogan' for all members of the party, KPA, and the citizenry on July 31st. The announcement was followed by a mass rally in Pyongyang as a show of resolution to bring the announcement's objectives to fruition (Aug. 06).

The GOP's initial platform, announced on July 28th, stipulating preventing all aggressive action in the Korean peninsula, blocking proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction, and creation of a missile umbrella, brought hostile diatribe in response from North Korea's Central Broadcasting. The North's official broadcasting establishment denounced the platform as `an attempt at military imperialism and to monkey-wrench the reduction of tensions currently in progress in the Korean peninsula'.

North Korea's Public Announcement Commission and the central committee of its Reporters' League hosted a banquet on Aug. 5th for the visiting South Korean media delegation, and arranged visits to the Worker's Daily building, North Korea's Central Broadcasting Commission, and the Arch of Triumph.
