Kim Jong-il paid his respects to his father and late North Korean leader Kim Il-sung at the Keumsusan Memorial, where the elder Kim has been permanently embalmed, with KPA Politburo chief Cho Myung-rok, JCS chairman Kim Young-choon, and other top brass and military committee members, at midnight on July 8th, to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the elder Kim's death. The ceremony was preceded by the current North Korean leader's visit to KPA Unit 3971 (July 4th), Unit 324, and auxiliary artillery units.

North Korean publications `The Worker's Daily', and `The Laborer', issued a joint editorial entitled, `Creation of a superpower through firm emphasis on science', urging that North Korea must concentrate all resources towards progress in science and technology.

In reaction to charges of disrespect for freedom of the press from the Chosun Daily in an declaration on June 30th for the North Korean refusal to allow the paper's reporters into the North to cover the Red Cross, North Korea's Pyongyang Broadcasting called the daily's announcement `a serious affront to the North-South Declaration and an irresponsible act of provocation that must be taken priority over matters of freedom of the press'.
