Summit news

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il personally attended a number of events during the course of the summit, including the welcome and send-off for president Kim Dae-jung, one-to-one summit talks, state lunch and dinners, and signing of the South-North Joint Declaration.
The North Korean media reported in detail president Kim's arrival in Pyongyang and the proceedings of the inter-Korean summit. In addition, all anti-ROK propaganda was discontinued in connection with the summit, as well as going to great lengths to improve Kim Jong-il's public image as a leader of the unification process, and advertising the basic necessity of the inter-Korean summit.
The ROK Red Cross received proposals from its northern counterpart for discussions concerning the exchange of separated families (June 17).

North Korea dispatched its defense minister Kim Il-chul as an emissary to Syria on June 13th, to pay their respects at the funeral of the late Syrian president Hafez al-Assad, and broadcast news concerning the planned US assistance of 50000-tons of food. However, it also voiced its usual criticism for US military exercises, branding the RimPac 2000 Joint Military Exercises as a `display of American aggression and belligerence'.

A joint assembly of servicemembers and civilians were held at Taehongdan county, Yanggang province, as an official celebration to commemorate a public donation of farming equipment and vehicles to the county commune from the KPA.
