Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

WEEKLY NK NEWS (2000.5.15 - 2000.5.21)

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il urged increased production of ship engines for freighters and fishing vessels during his visit to the Pukchung General Machinery Company in North Pyongan province, and also conducted on-site inspection at reclamation sites for Uiju, Kwaksan, and Chongju.

The `Civil-Military Commemorative Assembly for the Completion of Land Reclamation in North Pyongan Province' was held in Sinuiju, North Pyongan province, with KPA politburo chief Cho Myong-rok, deputy prime minister Kwak Beom-ki, and 100000 soldiers and locan residents in attendance.

In foreign policy news, the spokesperson for North Korea's Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland blasted the bombing accidents at USFK's Kooney Firing Range in Maehyang-ri on May 8th as a `criminal act beyond redemption and an intolerable affront to the people of South Korea'. The organization also criticized claims of North Korean kidnappings of Japanese citizens as `boldfaced attempt by Japan to gain the upper hand at the North Korea-Japan Talks'.

North Korea's media simply reported that a fifteen-article working agreement was adopted at the Fifth Preparatory Meeting to the inter-Korean summit, but North Korea's propaganda organ The People's Democratic Front chose to engage in diatribe instead, condemning discussions for the maintenance of cooperation throughout the summit process, held during a tripartite Korea-Japan-US Policy Review Commission, as an attempt to hinder the inter-Korean talks.
