Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

WEEKLY NK NEWS (2000.5.1 - 2000.5.7)

Ranking party members Yang Hyung-sup and Kim Jung-ryn presided over the special May Day grand report session, and the party organ, the Worker's Daily, emphasized that `the working class must accelerate the creation of a superpower by carrying the 2nd Chollima Campaign even further'.

North Korean media attempted to fend off `ideological contamination' by urging its citizenry `not to harbor any fantasies concerning imperialism, and must not be fooled by words of assistance, partnership, and other veiled attempts at appeasement' in a nationwide broadcast for the day.

On the diplomatic front, the spokesperson for the North Korean foreign ministry criticized the US for `continuing to maintain a policy of hostility towards North Korea', in connection with inclusion of North Korea in the US State Department's list of terrorist states. North Korea also threatened `fundamental revision' of their basic position in the North Korea-Japan talks should Japan fail to desist from constant reference to North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

In connection with the ongoing talks for the expected inter-Korean summit, North Korea insisted that `favorable conditions for the talks' could be created through abolition of South Korea's National Security Law, dismantling of the National Intelligence Service, and an `overall transformation' of South Korea's policy to a one of alliance with the North, with the North Korean media again only making reference to the North Koran position in their nationwide broadcasts.
