Annan welcomes progress between US and DPR of Korea
17 October -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed the progress achieved between the Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States during the recent visit to the US by a special envoy of Kim Jong II, the Chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission.

The Special Envoy, Vice Marshal Jo Myong Rok, held meetings in Washington from 9-12 October.

According to a UN spokesman, the Secretary-General saluted in particular the decision by both States to take steps to "fundamentally improve their bilateral relations," and their commitment to make every effort "to build a new relationship free from past enmity." Noting that the inter-Korean process of reconciliation and cooperation was reinforced by these actions, Mr. Annan called on the international community to positively respond to the historic changes on the Korean Peninsula, the spokesman said.

The Secretary-General was also pleased to note today's decision by the General Assembly to include on the agenda of its current session an additional item titled "Peace, Security and Reunification on the Korean Peninsula." The spokesman said that Mr. Annan viewed this initiative as conducive to increasing the support by the international community for the "positive developments" on the Korean Peninsula.
