INTRO: North Korea has denounced U-S plans to build a
proposed national missile shield - which Washington
says is designed to defend against attacks from
countries such as North Korea. VOA's Alisha Ryu
reports Pyongyang's opposition echoes the sharp joint
warning Washington received on Tuesday from Russia and
China.
TEXT: North Korea's state news agency called
Washington's desire to protect the United States from
North Korean missiles "a sheer lie." Pyongyang says
what the United States really wants is unchallenged
military supremacy in the Pacific region.
The accusation came just before Russian President
Vladimir Putin arrived in Pyongyang - the first
Kremlin leader to visit communist North Korea. Mr.
Putin's visit follows meetings in Beijing Tuesday
where he and Chinese President Jiang Zemin urged the
international community to oppose U-S plans for a
National Missile Defense system. (Signed)
