INTRO: The South Korean government has proposed the
two Koreas hold a high-level meeting next week - to
follow-up on agreement signed at the first inter-Korea
summit last month. Hyun-Sung Khang reports from the
capital, Seoul.
TEXT: South Korean Prime Minister Lee Han-dong has
written a letter to his North Korean counterpart, Hong
Sung Nam, proposing the two countries open
ministerial-level talks later this month.
If they go ahead, this would be the first meeting
between senior-level officials from the two Koreas in
eight years. An official from Seoul's Unification
Ministry says the discussions would center on how to
implement the joint cooperation declaration signed by
the leaders of the two Koreas at their June summit in
Pyongyang.
The agreement includes provisions to reunite families
separated by the division of the peninsula and to work
toward eventual reunification. The Koreas have never
signed a peace treaty since the war ended in a truce
in 1953. They shared one of the world's most heavily
armed borders.
There has been no response from Pyongyang, but many
South Korean newspapers suggest the two Koreas have
already agreed on the date and venue for the meeting,
through unofficial contacts. (signed)
