Text: Second U.S. Visit to Kumchang-Ni Starts May 23
(Follow-up visit to N. Korean underground construction site) (250) A U.S. team will make a second visit to the underground construction site at Kumchang-ni in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) May 23. The purpose of the visit is to follow up and confirm the work of the first visit which took place in 1999. Following is the text of the State Department announcement of the visit: (begin text) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman May 15, 2000 STATEMENT BY RICHARD BOUCHER, SPOKESMAN SECOND U.S. VISIT TO KUMCHANG-NI TO START MAY 23 On March 16, 1999, the U.S. and North Korea reached agreement on U.S. access to the underground construction site at Kumchang-ni. A U.S. team visited the underground facility at Kumchang-ni from May 20-24, 1999. Based on the data gathered by them at that time and a subsequent technical review, the U.S. concluded that the underground site at Kumchang-ni did not violate the 1994 U.S.-DPRK Agreed Framework. A second U.S. visit to the site at Kumchang-ni will begin May 23, 2000. The purpose of the second visit will be to follow up and confirm the work of the first visit.
