S. Korea: NK Famine Left 270,000 Dead
SEOUL - About 270,000 North Koreans are believed to have died of famine between 1995 and 1998, or 26.4 percent of the 1.02 million deaths in that period, South Korean government figures showed Friday.
That is higher than the 220,000 famine-caused deaths reported by North Korean officials during the period. A U.S. congressional report estimated that more than 2 million people may have died of starvation in the country since 1995.
South Korea's National Statistics Office said it produced the estimates on the basis of North Korea's last reported population census in 1993 and from testimonies of hundreds of defectors from the country.
