Weekly on North Korea (99. 10.25 - 10.31)

Kim Jong-il delivered instructions to workers at a food factory supplying the armed forces with bean paste and soy sauce on his inspection tour there with Chief of the KPA Politburo Cho Myung-rok and Party Secretary Kim Kuk-tae, and convened the Eighteenth Plenary Session of the Kim Il-sung Socialist Youth League at Pyongyang, leading discussions concerning revision of roles of the league's lower-level leadership and how to accomplish the aforementioned task of revision.

On the diplomatic front, North Korea handed over remains of US servicemen killed in action during the Korean War directly into American hands. In contrast to the goodwill gesture, the party organ Worker's Daily blasted `conservative forces in the US' for `attempting to crush North Korea with brute strength,' and The Democratic Choson also joined in a propaganda attack charging the US with `misleading the public' into thinking that `North Korea is hoping for lifting of the trade embargo, food aid, and improved relations with the US,' while making claims to the contrary.

North Korea declared that the 'friendship forged with blood' between North Korea and China will `live on forever through generations' on the forty-ninth anniversary of the Chinese entry into the Korean War. The Ministry of Defense invited the Chinese embassy staff to Okryu-kwan Restaurant to celebrate the event,

North Korea's foreign ministry spokesperson erroneously described the Fall Eagle Joint Exercises involving the ROK and US forces as an `exercise in preemptive assault against North Korea.' In addition, the Workers' Daily asserted that `anything short of a complete abolition of the National Security Law amounts to ridicule of the people.'
