Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 10.18 - 10.24)

The completion of the autumn harvest in North Korea was celebrated in the media spotlight, which also reported on the `Second Grand Chollima Pioneer March' of `hidden achievers', `innovators', and scientists to be convened in early November.

North Korea denounced the annual `Fall Eagle' joint ROK-US military exercise (Oct. 02-06) as a `double standard of relaxing economic sanctions while continuing military exercises aimed at aggression,' and said it will have a `negative impact on US-North Korea relations'.

In an interview broadcast on the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Basic Agreement (Oct. 21, 1994) between North Korea and the US, a spokesperson for North Korea's foreign ministry claimed that his country `did all we could' but it is being met by `insincerity on the part of the US', and that should the light water reactor fail to be completed by 2003 as a result, the US should be `made to bear all consequences of its actions'.

North Korea convened a `Report Session' in Pyongyang to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Pusan-Masan Civil Uprising (Oct. 1979) with Workers Party Secretary Choi Tae-bok and Secretary of the Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland An Kyung-ho in attendance, calling on the students and the people of South Korea to `abolish the National Security Law and smash the divisive policy of so-called tolerance'.
