Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 10.4 - 10.10)

Kim Jong-il was again on the inspection trail, this time to frontline military units, with Politburo Chief Cho Myung-rok, Chief of the North Korean JCS Kim Young-choon, Defense Minister Kim Il-chul, and other members of the top brass, to inspect preparations for combat. The entourage also proceeded to encourage troopers involved in the construction of a power plant and urged its speedy completion.

Speaker of the North Korean Supreme People's Assembly Kim Young-nam, Politburo Chief Cho Myung-rok, and other ranking members of the party, government, and the military participated in a Grand Report Session to commemorate the second anniversary of Kim Jong-il's installation as General Secretary of the North Korean Workers' Party. The participants praised the leadership of Kim Jong-il and pledged absolute loyalty to the present supreme leader.

North Korea tried to divert attention from its own nuclear issue by criticizing Japan's importation of plutonium as a preliminary attempt to become a nuclear superpower, and also engaged in unsubstantiated accusations against South Korea, claiming that the ROK is importing its own share of plutonium.

North Korea mobilized the National Front and other front organizations in a propaganda blitz for US compensation for alleged American atrocities in regions north of the DMZ during the Korean war, following reports of wartime massacres at Nokeun-ri, urging the citizens of the ROK and peoples around the world to call for the withdrawal of the USFK.
