Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 8.23 - 8.29)

Ranking members of the North Korean Workers' Party and the government visited factories and construction sites to commemorate National Youth Day on August 28th, and encouraged young workers to become what the North Korean media describe as the `vanguard of socialism,' urging youth to defend Kim Jong-il to the death.

The head of the North Korean Social Sciences Institute, Tae Hyung-chul, and other scholars were on hand to conduct debates on the merits of Kim Jong-il's thoughts on building the economy and so-called `interest-oriented economic management' at the First Conference of the Association of Economists.

The head of North Korea's delegation to Panmunjom, Pak Im-su, threatened `decisive response' to any refusal by the Americans to negotiate on the Maritime DMZ in Korea's West Sea.

North Korea urged citizens of the ROK to engage in a struggle for unification and against the government, and also encouraged them to follow unification policies as set forth by the elder and junior Kims, during a propaganda campaign conducted through the media and the grand report session at Pyongyang to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the establishment of the National Democratic Front, a political front organization for the North's anti-Southern policies.
