Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 7. 26 - 8. 1)

North Korea's defense ministry hosted an evening of celebration and an assembly of soldiers from the three armed services to pledge loyalty to Kim Jong-il, who was on an inspection tour of KPN Unit 155. The same rains that struck the ROK have reportedly flooded fields, destroyed buildings, and generally caused severe damage in the North.

The North claimed their show of goodwill was contingent upon confidence and security-building measures from the US, such as withdrawal of the USFK. North Korea also voiced critical opinions concerning Japan, urging the Japanese to speak candidly regarding their historical atrocities and recent importation of plutonium fuel.

The Preparatory Committee for the Pan-Korean Festival issued a statement calling for the release of ROK prisoners incarcerated for violation of public security laws, and lambasted the ROK government's plan to import AGM-142 (Popeye) missiles as `warmongering' and an attempt to invade the North.

n a blatant display of double standards, North Koreans charged the ROK government with interrupting the Mt. Kumgang tours, one day before the announcement of results from negotiations between Hyundai and North Korea's Asia-Pacific Committee.
