Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Weekly on North Korea (99. 6. 28 - 7. 4)

Kim Jong-il visited KPA Unit 409 upon completing his inspection tour of a farm commune in Anbyun, Kangwon Province. Institutions and organizations throughout North Korea convened "research and debate sessions" and "loyalty assemblies" to swear absolute allegiance to the elder and junior Kims on the eighth of July, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the death of Kim Il-sung.

Top stories and headlines in the North Korean media this week emphasized news concerning abnormal weather patterns such as heat waves, droughts, and cold spells affecting various areas in North Korea, and also an impending visit to North Korea by Cambodia's King Sihanouk.

North Korea referred to the ROK government's investigative report on the incident involving tourist Min Young-mi as "slander" and indicated no change would be forthcoming concerning the personal safety of tourists, by declaring that "tourists are still welcome, but stern punishment await impure elements."

North Korea threatened the ROK with "commensurate retribution" for former NK secretary Hwang Jang-yop's interview, which they cited as justification for canceling additional talks at the deputy-ministers' meeting in Beijing.
